I know this all too well. Below is an email that I sent 10 years ago to yet another new screen printer I found online after being disappointed by the last. It felt like I'd never find reliable screen printing for my clients so in 2014 I committed to learning screen printing...
Because if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.
2014-2017. Trial and Error
Before moving to our current Lakewood, CA location in August 2017, we screen printed out of a live/work loft in downtown Los Angeles.
We were building and managing eCommerce websites for our clients and over time started noticing a consistent theme of unreliable screen printers. Slow communication, missed deadlines, and low quality work. Why were so many of our clients having the same issues? This effects are ability to service our customers so we had to intervene.
So we began sourcing printers for our clients.
- First, by using printers our friends recommended. FAIL, low quality.
- Second, we tried online print shops located out of state. FAIL, they only used Direct To Garment printing and they didn't offer on press photos to approve.
- Next, by searching Los Angeles County screen printers and visiting their shops. FAIL, after one or two orders, they started missing deadlines.
In late 2014 we bit the bullet, bought a 4 color, one-station screen printing press from and flash dryer Ace Screen Printing Supply and started watching Youtube University to learn screen printing.
The enjoyable part about this industry is that 10 years later we still improve, learn, and develop as a top rate screen printing shop because screen printing is not an easy thing to be good at. It's ink pushed through screens to create your art on tshirts. Screen printing has been around for 70+ years and the process remains pretty much the same and that creative element is what drives us to pursue this industry deeper.
